We are a co-operative of independent conference interpreters with an office in Amsterdam. Our language service was the first of its kind in the Netherlands when it was founded more than four decades ago. All Congrestolken interpreters (see below) are members of the International Association of Conference Interpreters, AIIC. In addition to our members, we work with an extensive global network of more than 2900 AIIC interpreters.
Congrestolken provides interpreters who are academically trained and work at the highest international and national level (UN, EU, national governments).
Notes on language classification according to AIIC:
A language: The interpreter’s native language into which they interpret from all their working languages (also called an active language.)
B language: A language that the interpreter masters at near-native level and into which they interpret, but usually not from all their working languages (active language.)
C language: A language from which the interpreter interprets into their A (native) language. This is a passive language, i.e. the interpreter does not work into this language.
Examples: An interpreter with an A-C-C-C language combination works from three passive languages into their native language, but does not interpret back into any of these languages.
An interpreter with an A-B combination works back and forth between their mother tongue and a foreign language.
An interpreter with an A-B-C-C combination works back and forth between their native language and one foreign language and has two more working languages from which they interpret into their native language but not the other way round.
