What does successful conference interpreting actually look like? For Patricia Heintz, who has worked as a conference interpreter since 1986, the answer may sound surprising:
“When people communicate in different languages without really realising that there are two interpreters between them.”
When conference interpreters become almost invisible
Throughout her career, Patricia has interpreted during management board meetings at Europol and international events such as the UN Water Conference.
Across these different settings, one principle has remained constant: when multilingual communication flows naturally, the conference interpreters almost disappear into the background.
But that apparent effortlessness is anything but automatic.
Professional interpreting requires human expertise
“I would like people to know that interpreters are real human beings,” Patricia says. “Interpretation is not automatic.”
Behind every assignment lie careful preparation, intense concentration and the ability to quickly become familiar with a complex subject.
Understanding the words is one thing. Understanding their context, meaning and intention is something else entirely.
Professional conference interpreting requires interpreters to listen, process information and communicate almost simultaneously—all while remaining faithful to the speaker and attentive to the people listening.
Conference interpreting in a changing profession
As new technologies continue to develop, Patricia sees both opportunities and challenges for the interpreting profession.
Technology may support parts of the process, but communication involves much more than transferring words from one language into another. Nuance, intention and context remain essential, especially during meetings where every participant needs to understand and be understood.
Ultimately, successful conference interpreting is still about one thing:
People understanding people.
